How to Make Feed for Chickens with Your Hands

Making waterers and feeders for chickens is not only profitable financially, but also extremely convenient since you can provide the bird with food and water for the time you need. To date, there are dozens of fairly effective structures that provide poultry with food and water and significantly reduce the risk of disease. What to choose for profitable poultry farming and how to save a large amount of money – read more!

When breeding birds, feeders are mandatory, and not only significantly increase the convenience of care, but also save your money on feed. It is known that the bird does not eat food that is trampled into the ground and gets dirty, as well as with the smell of mold and rot. Thus, feeders allow you to save up to 50% of feed because the bird does not drop it on the floor and feeds from a container where the grain mixture, feed or additives remain clean and stored for up to several weeks. There are several most common types of structures that are very effective for feeding, and it will not be difficult to make them with your own hands.

The most convenient design, which is most often used for feeding chickens, geese, turkeys, ducks and other poultry. Since its price mainly ranges from 1500 to 2500 rubles, it will be very important to make a feeder for chickens with your own hands. The cost of such a design is only 200-300 rubles, and if the right materials are available, it is completely free of charge. For the construction, you will need: a large plastic container, mainly from under food products, a plastic or metal basin. The best option is a potable water tank or a plastic bottle of 5-10 liters. Order of actions:

The bottom of a bottle or plastic cylindrical container is cut out in such a way that at a height of 2-3 from the bottom there are holes with a diameter of up to 1.5-2 cm. The holes can be slightly larger or smaller – this depends on the feed fraction (the larger the pellets or grain, the larger the holes).

The top of the container can be completely cut off for the convenience of laying feed. Place the bottom of the bottle in a metal or plastic basin and cover the feed for no more than 1-2 weeks.

As they feed in the bottle decreases, it can be added, if necessary, you can remove the feed bottle and set it aside.
A hopper feeder for chicken and other poultry is the cheapest and easiest way to provide uninterrupted and convenient food, and its construction will take you no more than 5 minutes if you have the right tool at hand.

A two-story building is a more complex option, which requires at least 2-3 hours of construction time. The advantages of two-story feeders are obvious: the bird does not trample or smear the feed, you can divide several types of feed by a partition, it is convenient to fall asleep. You can build it as follows:

Take wooden boards with a length of 25 cm and a width of 20 cm (you can use more, depending on how much feed you need to buy) and boards with a height of 10 cm and a length of 10-15 cm (on the ends of the first floor of the feeder). Shoot down a rectangle with similar dimensions from them, raise it with boards on the ends for the second floor.

Build the second floor of the feeder-a container for filling feed. It can be made of two parts so that you can alternate the nutrition of the bird and withstand any technology. The second tier is screwed with screws to the ends of the first floor and everything-the feeder is ready!
For maximum convenience, a flap should be hung on the inside so that the bird has access only to a small portion of food and does not spill it.
Two-story feeders for broilers are made mainly for a small number of birds, since the stock of feed in them, as a rule, is no more than 2-3 days. There are also other versions of feeders, but they are already difficult to make with your own hands, and the cost is very high.

Drinkers for chickens can be made from almost any material. Here, a plastic container, a metal basin, and an ordinary pipe will do. There are several main types of structures that are used for raising poultry at home:

Conventional car watering stations.

They are used when it is necessary to quickly make a convenient tank for poultry. The main drawback – chickens, ducks, geese will climb inside and the water will have to be changed there almost every day. There are several ways to make this kind of automatic watering system:
Cut a metal, plastic, or asbestos pipe lengthwise into 2 halves, seal the ends with rubber, hammer in wood or any other material.
Cut a car tire lengthwise with a knife is the most durable option, and you can make it in 1-2 minutes from an unnecessary old tire. The larger the wheel, the larger the water tank will be.

Vacuum drinkers.

More complex, but effective designs, as the bird will not have access to the entire volume of water, which will reduce the risk of disease. It is done quite simply and you will need a glass (plastic, metal) container and a sealed, flat base (for example, made of wood). In the base with the gutter, cut a hole no more than 1 cm, so that the water from the jar has an outlet in the gutter. When the hole is above the water level (if the bird is holding a certain volume), the water from the jar will fill the chute to the desired level.
Vacuum drinkers for broilers are quite difficult to make with your own hands, since you need to cut a small collar (groove) in the base, and sand the surface well. But such a 5-liter bowl will provide up to 100 heads of poultry with water for 2-3 days, because the liquid consumption will be much less.

A separate group of drinkers should include nipple-these are modern devices that have only positive qualities. The design of the nipple is complex enough to make it with your own hands, so it is better to buy such an element of the drinking bottle separately, and the body itself is already made by yourself. Advantages of nipple watering are as follows:

Metered feed.

The bird will not be able to spoil the water, as it will only drink the volume it needs. When the valve is pressed, water enters as soon as the valve is not pressed – the water supply is stopped.

Absence of pathogenic bacteria.

Dirt, dust, and micro-organisms do not enter the water, so the risk of an epidemic bird disease is excluded.
Versatile installation and quick replacement of parts. Thanks to the threaded connections, as well as quick-release housings, it is easy to repair the structure at home.

Possibility of Autonomous and automated water supply.

This system can be connected to a tap so that water is always supplied to the bird, even during your absence.
Unlimited service life due to the use of a simple and efficient water distribution system.

Water use can be 50 times less than in the case of conventional drinking systems. They need a little, 1 nipple = 35-40 heads of young birds.
Suitable even for day-old Chicks. They automatically get used to drinking from such nipples, since they see a drop of water and feel the moisture, and with an effort of just 4 grams on the button, the water begins to flow.

If you equip your chicken coop with homemade equipment, then you can significantly save money and increase the profitability of poultry farming!
