How To Feed and Care for Turkey At Home

TURKEYS-FEEDING AND CARE AT THE HOME FARMSTEAD

Among all poultry, it is most difficult to go out and raise young turkeys. Carefully following the recommendations, showing patience and care, you will be able to cope with this task.

THE CONDITIONS OF DETENTION OF TURKEYS

Properly organized place of maintenance, balanced feed, compliance with the temperature regime, and cleanliness in the pens-this is the key to the successful rearing of all Chicks. As for turkeys, there are some features that should be mentioned, but everything in order.

Newly hatched turkeys are recommended to leave in the nest until they are sufficiently dry, and the rest of the eggs, thanks to the presence of Chicks, will not cool down. In the meantime, we prepare the place and feed.

Mandatory compliance with the necessary temperature regime for small turkeys is extremely important, especially in the first five days of life. For the organization of such a warm place, a large box or box with soft bedding is best suited. Most often, this is an ordinary packaging container made of dense cardboard or plywood. But now farmers are successfully using modern polycarbonate for the device of transparent, warm and non-wet boxes. Another, even more, durable option – small cabinets with a lattice front door and a floor of fine metal mesh with a lower sliding tray.

To warm the Chicks will help suspended red lamps, bringing or removing which you can adjust the temperature. In the first week, it should remain at the level of 35-37 degrees, in the second – 30-32, and gradually decreasing, by the age of one and a half months of turkeys, the temperature in the pen remains about 18-20 degrees.

Light mode is also very important, especially in the first five to seven days. All because the eyesight of small turkeys is still imperfect and it is difficult for them to find feeders at dusk. Therefore, feeding turkeys at home takes place under bright lighting, the intensity of which decreases as the Chicks Mature.

As a litter, experienced farmers recommend using ordinary fabric in several additions (old towels, pieces of unsuitable sheets and other material available on the farm will go into use). Babies in such a litter will not get confused, unlike the Seine, and it will not get stuck in their tender down like sawdust. The only drawback of the fabric-fast wetting and the need to change it two or three times a day. But later, when the turkeys are a little stronger, you can use both soft dry grass and sawdust as bedding.

Remembering the poor eyesight of small turkeys, feeders and waterers are placed in the lightest part of the box. Hatched babies still have soft, vulnerable beaks, so conventional feeders with a hard bottom are not suitable for them. It is most convenient to layout food on pieces of cloth, which will also absorb excessive moisture of the feed, harmful to the intestines of Chicks.The image shows the placement of feeders for turkeys

CARE AND FEEDING OF TURKEYS IN THE FIRST DAYS

After placing the new arrivals in a new place, you need to think about what to feed the daily-old turkeys. Of course, they did not hatch at the same time and not all at once, but by about the end of the second day, most turkeys have their goiter cleared, and they are ready to eat. The first thing they are offered to taste is a chopped boiled egg with the addition of crushed cereals, starting with a ratio of 1:4, bringing it to half. Solid pieces of food are needed to stimulate the weak digestive tract of small turkeys.The picture shows the feeding of daily turkeys

In the next day, grated carrots (vitamins and fiber) can be added to one of the feedings, and in another – chopped green onions and young nettles (prevention of intestinal diseases). Due to the peculiarities of the structure of the body of babies, it is important to strictly monitor the freshness of the feed. The fact is that the length of their intestines in proportion to the size of the body is greater than in adults, which means that the food in it is longer. And if a stale product gets into the chick’s body, then there is a danger of intestinal disorders, which often lead to fatal outcomes. Especially watch carefully for dairy products that are added to the bags of birds – low-fat cottage cheese, curd, milk concentrate, they often violate the fragile microflora of the gastrointestinal tract of turkeys. As for the feed rich in fiber, then here too, care must be taken, since a large number of coarse fibers leads to intestinal blockage, so crushed herbs are introduced into the composition of wet mixes gradually, in small quantities.

DAILY NORMS OF THE DIET OF GROWING TURKEYS

The development and growth of turkeys require a balanced diet, including proteins( proteins), carbohydrates, trace elements, fats, fiber and vitamins. When thinking about how to feed small turkeys up to 10 days of age, it is necessary to adhere to the following norms of the composition of wet mixes:

  • boiled eggs-10%;
  • fresh low-fat cottage cheese-10%;
  • crushed corn, wheat sowings, flour mixture-65%;
  • bran – 12%;
  • mineral additives (chalk, shells, bone meal, charcoal, etc.) – 2%.

Yogurt can be added to the mixers or poured separately into the waterers so that the turkeys can eat at any time. After feeding, it is advisable to remove the remains, because at high air temperature maintained in the place of keeping turkeys, pathogenic bacteria quickly multiply and the product turns sour.

For turkeys older than 10 days, fresh chopped greens are added when preparing wet mixes. If the children’s body has accepted grass well, then its content in compound feed can be brought up to half the volume.

Water is given clean, settled at room temperature. And when choosing drinkers, the main thing to remember is to prevent the possibility of getting wet Chicks. In the first stages, feeding and caring for turkeys is especially troublesome, since weak Chicks are very sensitive to any changes and diseases. In addition to the danger of intestinal diseases, turkeys are afraid of possible hypothermia and colds. And if wet goslings, ducklings, and even chickens have a chance of survival, then turkeys have almost minimal chances. Therefore, it is easier to prevent colds by using automatic drinkers and replacing wet bedding in a timely manner.Image of a Turkey feeder

Having decided what to feed monthly turkeys, it is necessary to find out how much their daily diet is in grams per chick.

  • barley – from the first day from 12g, increasing the norm to 35g by the 120th day of life of turkeys;
  • millet-gives only in the first three weeks on 10g;
  • oats – only from the third month from 10 to 30 g;
  • wheat – from the second month, starting from 10g, increasing the dose to 20g by three months of life;
  • crushed corn – as a transition from fine-ground cereals to whole grains, from approximately 60-day-old turkeys to 80-day-old;

The picture shows the correct organization of feeding turkeys

Having organized a proper and balanced diet and knowing when and how to feed the turkeys, do not forget to provide them with the necessary minerals. Among such additives, chalk, pieces of river shells, coarse sand, charcoal, bone meal, or ash, as well as a small amount of table salt are more often used. And if small Chicks are added to the mix, then it is more convenient to allocate separate dishes from 2 weeks of age. The turkeys themselves know how much and what they need to eat from this feeder, and your task will only be to make sure that its contents do not get wet and are replenished in a timely manner.
